The early 1960s were the start of a unique era in which young people felt free to experience life in different ways than had their parents. At that time, the seemingly unlikely sport of surfing ocean waves was in full bloom. In just 2-3 years having grown from a thousand or two enthusiasts to millions, spread- ing from San Diego to Kansas City and Miami.
“The Ride” alludes to these stories and more, rides of all types, on both land and sea … from which is composed the fascinating journey of one Richard Graham.” – Steve Pezman
“I’m Dick Graham, the 1964 founder and former editor/publisher of Surfing Magazine and previous President of Sports Market Promotions, a company formed to create and produce extreme sports events for national and international television programming.”
2014 was Surfing Magazine’s 50th anniversary year. The beginnings in the era of the Endless Summer, Gidget on TV, the Beach Party movies, the Beatles tour of America and the Beach Boy’s music; the lifestyle and art of riding waves was on the radar from coast to coast.
We started the Publication with the thought of creating a surf magazine that would elevate the act of surfing above all else. The best way to do that was to run the best surfing pictures in the world, quoting Associate Editor and master surf photographer LeRoy Grannis “it’ll be my job to get those shots.”
My Book “The Ride” conveys the early years of establishing the Magazine and illustrates the evolution and advancements related to wave riding around the world, including the male and female personalities of the era, the equipment and a look at the early years of amateur and professional competition.
After the sale of Surfing, I formed Sports Market Promotions to create and produce extreme sports events for television programming, sponsorship and product licensing. The Book’s content and key subjects include a variety of competitive sports: US Motocross Gran Prix, The Expression Session (free form surfing), World Skateboard Championships, World Championship Series Of Martial Arts (full contact), American Pro Surfing Championships, Women’s Head-To-Head Pro Ski Racing, The Funny Car 500 – Drag Racing. Pictures and highlights from these events and promotions are included in “The Ride”.
I stayed active in what was called the “Active Lifestyle Business” over the following years by providing perspective to companies including The Bolt Corporation, Body Glove, Dive ‘N Surf, Hang Ten International, Golden Breed Sportswear, Hobie Seawear, Ocean Pacific Activewear, Scuba Pro plus Neofin and Laguna Swim Fin’s.
The luxury of riding reef or shore break surf in clear warm water on a glassy summer morning is what it’s all about … “The Ride”.
